Sheriff's Deputies
A Sheriff's Deputy, or Deputy Sheriff, is a sworn law enforcement officer responsible directly to the Sheriff of the county. All deputies must meet state minimum standards as established by the NC Sheriffs’ Training and Standards Commission, which includes a 16 week basic training academy, and state administered test. A deputy works at the pleasure of the sitting Sheriff and must be re-sworn in every four years when the sitting Sheriff is elected or re-elected. The deputy may be assigned a number of duties including uniformed patrol, investigations, civil, courtroom security, K-9 officer, or any other area as deemed necessary by the Sheriff.
