Anson County Jail

The Anson County Jail was opened in 1984 and is located at the same address as the Sheriff’s Office. The present Jail replaced an old jail that was built around 1912. That building was demolished and a parking lot is now located where that building stood. The present jail has a capacity of sixty (60) beds. In 2010, the average daily inmate population was 68. The Jail books over 2,000 individuals annually.

The Jail is inspected annually by the local health department and fire department and twice annually by the NC State Division of Facility Services/Jail and Detention Section.

Captain Freddie Paxton is the current Jail Administrator. Cpt. Paxton is in charge of all the Detention Officer staff and ensures that the day to day operations of the jail are properly taken care of and reports to the Sheriff when necessary.

Jail Staff

The Anson County Jail has an average of 217 total bookings each month. To serve and ensure the facility, the Sheriff hires 55 employees to take charge of facility. This includes correctional officers, deputies, and non-uniform staff. This consists of the cooks, the groundmen, the transportation unit, commissary attendants, lobby workers, doctors, and nurses.

In addition, the facility employs more than 30 offenders in its in-office work lines yearly to assist with its laundry, culinary, and other operations.

Inmate Intake

The facility has a 68-bed capacity that serves the City of Wadesboro, local law enforcement agencies, neighboring cities, and unincorporated regions in the county. The facility houses inmates depending on their crimes, current danger, and conduct. The jail is an adult minimum-medium security facility that houses both male and female offenders who have been arrested or are awaiting sentencing for breaking the NC state and federal laws, County and municipal ordinances.

The majority of the inmate awaits trial in court or bail. After sentencing, most of them are transported to State or federal prisons. On the other hand, others are sentenced to the county's rehabilitative detention facilities, such as mental or drug-related rehabilitation centers.

However, some inmates serve their time in the facility. These inmates have a sentence ranging from a month to 24 months. In addition, these inmates are non-violent offenders with non-violent crimes. Moreover, they have a chance for release on parole after serving a few weeks or months in the facility.
